The Elements Of A Ship #2

Here are a few more drawings from my sail on the Amistad from Mystic Seaport to New
London, CT.

Sailing into New London

One of the crew members, Erica, was in charge of keeping a lookout for oncoming ships.

Amber was in charge of raising the American Flag and an array of other tasks. She informed me she will soon be rebuilding parts of the Amistad that need to be repaired.

The Elements Of A Ship

This past Thursday I got a chance to reportage the Amistad. I was invited to sail aboard it from its voyage from Mystic Seaport to New London, CT.  I have drawn the outside of this ship on a few occasions but this time something new caught my eyes and I saw the ship in such a different way. The ropes, the hooks, the chains and the sails! The textures! The combination of these materials were amazing to draw. Here is one of the drawings from my three hour sail. -Danielle

Scale at the Met

Have you ever been to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City? It really is one of my favorite museums and I love all the galleries. (plus they have good coffee) However, that grand hall always gets me. The scale of that main entrance is insane! I love the ornate columns and all the detail in the structure of the ceiling. It's like art nouveau heaven. Here is a study of the scale I did a few years ago at the Met. -Danielle

A New Media

My friend and illustrator, Julia Sverchuk, creates beautiful drawings with her iphone! I am truly always amazed.  I tried it a few times on my ipod touch but it never really took. My patience always got the best of me. Last week I was on the subway on my way to meet a friend. I had no paper and no pen because I had left my house in a rush! So as I was on the subway I thought oh I have my ipod let me give this thing another try! It was actually really fun trying to do different things on my ipod touch with the program, doodle buddy. It was like finger painting just with no mess! My mentors always tell me it's good to try new things to expand your vocabulary!

Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund

Danielle C. McManus along with her fellow illustrators and friends from the Dalvero Academy were recently featured on the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund website and Facebook page.  In the fall of 2008 we were given the assignment by our instructor  Veronica Lawlor to design a poster commemorating the Fallen Heroes Fund using our digital photography. What a great project. Check it out!- Danielle

If you would like to contribute to the fund please visit The Fallen Heroes Fund website!

The Amistad at Mystic Seaport

The Amistad docked at Mystic Seaport last week and completed her 2010 Caribbean Heritage Tour successfully.  I was very excited to learn this as I am eager to get more drawings of her done!

Last year my drawing of the ship was featured on the Amistad America website. Please feel free to check it out!-Danielle
